STORIES with IMPACT – A Fireside Chat on Clubhouse

On Thurs. February 24th at 7:00 PM ET, join the Black TV & Film Collective for a fireside chat on social responsibility and storytelling – on Clubhouse!

This fireside chat is FREE and explores how we as a community can use our art to “reflect the times”.

 

How can we create stories with impact in our communities? What is our social responsibility? Where do we start?

We started the conversation by watching the HBO docu-series Obama: In Pursit of a More Perfect Union.

Then, we heard from amazing agents of change in our communities, Kerry Croft and Krishna Davenport at our two-day virtual event, Community Conversations.

Now we’re talking about action! How do we take what we know about our world and change it in a positive way – using our art?

We’re asking you to bring YOUR knowledge and insight to the table to discuss creative ways you have been inspired and motivated to create stories of impact, that will further and add to our legacy as people. We’ll also provide an opportunity for people informally pitch their ideas, share ideas and network to find collaborators to help YOU tell your story!

We’re featuring Yhá Mourhia Wright (Writer/Producer, “Love My Roomie”), Okema T. Moore (Emmy-nominated Producer, “LadyLike), Kellianne Rae Jordan (Actor/Writer/Producer, “The Park”).

We’re also welcoming back Kerry Croft (Brand Curator) and Krishna Davenport (Founder of The Baobab Wellness Collective) to continue the conversation.

This is a great opportunity for us to dive into how storytelling and activism often go hand in hand!

Office Hours: Get Help On Your Project

Start 2022 off right and #MakeYourWork! Chat with BTFC Board Member and writer, director, and 2021 producer Emmy-nominated producer (UnladyLike 2020) Okema T. Moore about your project!

During Office Hours we do our best to offer insight and feedback that can help push you forward!

During BTFC Office Hours we’ll answer general production questions and provide an environment where you can get advice and feedback on your projects from industry professionals.

How can we better describe them? It’s an open door for any member who would like to just come in and ask a question. Get a second pair of eyes on a rough cut, get some help on budgets, have your script reviewed…Remember back in the day when our professors had office hours and you would just go in to ask a question or get some help? That is what these office hours are like.

Join us to talk about your projects and ideas, so that you’re better equipped to move them forward. It’s all-time well spent.

NOTE: 40-minute slots will be assigned on a first RSVP basis. A Zoom link will be sent to you 48 hours before your session. Please block out 4:00 – 6:00 PM ET on your calendar until your slot is received.

 

About Okema T. Moore

Okema T. Moore is a seasoned producer, writer, and director who started as a child actor on Sesame Street, cultivating quite a life of experiences since then. These experiences include sharing an EMMY Nomination for a PSA she AD’d, produced and voiced, premiering as a digital series producer at Tribeca Film Festival’s Tribeca N.O.W. 2019, producing the NAACP nominated doc series UNLADYLIKE2020 for PBS, and producing the American Black Film Festival 2019 Best Web Series, Little Apple. She can be seen as a hologram in Brian Stevenson’s Equal Justice Initiative Legacy Museum in Montgomery, AL, and in successful web series such as Makeup X Breakup and the Emmy Nominated Pillow Talk.Behind the scenes, Okema holds a BS in finance and business from Brooklyn College and a Producing Certification from NYU’s SPS. A member of the Board of Directors of the Black TV & Film Collective, Okema leads Programming.

Screenwriter’s Workshop: Table Reading Our Work

Every 2nd Wednesday of the month, BTFC screenwriters come together for online table read sessions and to workshop our screenplays. If you are working on a piece and would like to participate by having your pages read aloud, RSVP. For active writers, this is an event that you should not miss. Share your work, listen to the work of other writers, and get valuable feedback from other BTFC members. Each session is a read-athon. So if you would like your work table read, RSVP for this writer’s workshop session.

During read-athons, we can usually read about 4-6 works. Writers should submit up to 6 pages to be read aloud. The scripts are read in order of attendance on the zoom.

If you are a writer an actor, a producer, DP or other looking for upcoming productions, come and meet the writer/directors getting their work ready for primetime. This workshop is a great networking opportunity!

SOFY SOLOMON is a producer committed to telling meaningful stories and developing new voices. She comes from a family that endlessly re-watches certain movies/shows, and she hopes to contribute to that short-list of highly-curated content.

Sofy helped create and continues to run the Sesame Workshop Writers’ Room, a talent incubator that has launched writing careers at Disney, Netflix, DreamWorks, and beyond. As a volunteer at the New York Public Library, she started a free writing workshop series that is open to the public.

With origins in the US, Eritrea, and Ethiopia; a Yale degree in Economics and a French Masters in Anthropology/Music; and a growing collection of cellos in Paris, NYC and Alabama—she’s learned not to put anyone in a box.

About Laura Fielder

LAURA FIELDER is an award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker.  She made her directing debut with Milan’s First Day (2015).

Her recent short, The Company You Keep (2019), is currently making the film festival rounds.

Laura’s films have been screened at festivals like The Hip Hop Film Festival, The Toronto Black Film Festival, The Katra Film Series, and The Baltimore International Film Festival.  Laura is a graduate of the UCLA TFT Professional Program in Screenwriting.

Sound of Metal: Discussion Circle

Let’s talk about the highly acclaimed film, Sound of Metal. 

On Thursday, May 27th; we’re discussing the highly praised film,  the Sound of Metal. Come ready to dive into what makes this film that won the BAFTA Award for Best Editing, the Academy Award for Best Film Editing, the Academy Award for Best Sound…the Critic’s Choice Movie Award for Best Editing – to name a few – resonate with audiences across the globe.
